The community team in Victoria Falls were guests at a special event recently to celebrate the opening of a new Rose of Charity orphanage building. Also present, government officials, corporate representatives, and members of the surrounding communities witnessed the Ministry of Social Welfare officially endorse the establishment; the second children’s home run by Rose of Charity within a 200 kilometre radius.
The new facility is located on the border of the Monde and Sizinda districts and can house up to 15 children from these two communities. Children will remain at the current home in the Chinotimba area until they have completed primary education. Those of secondary school age will be moved to the new home, as it is located close to Sizinda Secondary School. With solar power and a direct water line from Victoria Falls, it aims to be self-sustainable in the long term. Two chicken runs, a goat kraal, and a vegetable garden will allow the home to produce much of its own food, while an after-school centre and soccer field will offer educational and social activities for the children.
Sima Moyo, Director of Rose of Charity, expressed her gratitude to ALERT, Lion Encounter, and African Impact for their ongoing support of the orphanage. Most of the donations that helped finance the building of the new house came from former volunteers. ALERT and Lion Encounter also offer support with school fees and material donations, as well as proving after-school programs. Sima said that she hopes these relationships continue to grow for the benefit of the children and the wider community.
