A significant aspect of the support that ALERT offers to the community is the important role that our volunteers play through their assistance at local projects.
One such project, Monde Primary School in Victoria Falls, is testament to the difference that this support can make to the development of children. By investing their time to work one-to-one with students, especially those children with learning difficulties who may fall behind, the volunteers are actively improving their education, providing a more secure foundation for further study. As is the case with most community schools, teachers are not available for all grades and resources are extremely limited. With 300 children at the school, most of them orphans, this kind of individual support wouldn’t be possible without the help of volunteers.
This support doesn’t necessarily end when the volunteers go home. For many, the experience of working so closely with people from disadvantaged backgrounds is profound and has a lasting effect on their lives. This school, and others like it, receive donations and resources from previous volunteers all over the world which are vital in enabling them to continue to provide an education in impoverished communities. Monde Primary School has recently received a generous donation of resources from a small group of past volunteers which will go a long way to assist teaching staff.
