Learning about learning keeps Kids Club interesting

Kid’s Club lessons are continuing as usual throughout the school holiday; and the children are still eager to attend!  Children from the Chinotimba area have been attending the Rose of Charity Orphanage to take part in lessons given by ALERT staff and volunteers. 

Lessons are geared towards more practical things like organisational skills, team building, how to be a good friend, etc.  This past week, the students learned all about what it means to be a good learner.  The students were able to highlight how a good learner should act, and what a good learner looks like in a classroom.  Some answers given included: paying attention when the teacher is talking, completing homework, and asking questions. 

It was then explained to the children that every person learns differently.  Some students do well with reading instructions on a board, some need simply listen to instructions, and some need to be guided with an example.  ALERT staff then conducted a questionnaire, which categorised the students into visual, auditory, or kinaesthetic learners.  Once the questionnaire was completed, the children were put into groups with other children who had the same learning style.  They were asked to come up with ideas for a perfect looking classroom based on their learning style. 

Once the students generated some ideas, they were asked to draw the classroom.  The children were very excited to get creative with what they would include in their drawings.  Items included hand-held machines, and robots for the kinaesthetic learners, walls made of chalkboards for the visual learners, and microphones with elaborate stereo systems for the auditory learners!  Each group then presented their classrooms to the rest of the children, and explained why they included every item in the room.  Students really seemed to enjoy showing off how cool their classroom was!

About Kids Club

Kids Club is our opportunity to implement our Basic Life Skills Course.  The aim of the course is to assist children and adolescents to gain essential skills needed to operate effectively in society in an active and constructive way.  Topics in the course include; self-esteem, coping with stress, effective communication, decision making, problem solving and non-violent conflict resolution.  The course has been developed by David Brackstone of John Taylor High School, UK using a programme in use at that school and adapted for use in our schools in Africa.

About ALERT Education Centres (AEC)

Basic Life Skills courses are one aspect of the work of our ALERT Education Centres.  The AEC operations at Livingstone (Zambia), Victoria Falls and Antelope Park (Zimbabwe) are all aimed at supporting the formal education system by offering extra-curricular activities to enhance student learning, and assisting with access to education for vulnerable students.  Current programs include the provision of classes in conservation education, basic life skills, and English literacy.  In addition, we provide funding to pay the fees of vulnerable students to take part in education from pre-school to university level, and fully funded internship and facilitated research placements for university level students.  Future programmes will incorporate classes in numeracy, health & nutrition, physical education and business studies/entrepreneurship, as well as a variety of vocational training.  The AEC is operated in association with Coventry University (UK), Midlands State University (Zimbabwe) and Copperbelt University (Zambia), and with the assistance of David Brackstone of John Taylor High School (UK).   The first AEC, at Antelope Park, was opened in 2012 by the then Zimbabwe Minister of Education, Mr. David Coltart.
