Refurbishments improve quality of life for Victoria Falls Old People’s Home residents
August 30 2016

Along with visiting the home on a weekly basis, ALERT has sought to undertake two small but impactful improvements to the Victoria Falls Old People’s Home.  The latest refurbishments aimed to make the home more accessible to the residents, and to improve sanitation.

Firstly, volunteers from our partners at African Impact, as well as ALERT staff, took to the task of creating ramps for residents who had trouble entering and exiting their houses.  Altering two sets of steps into ramps has made a world of difference to the elderly at the home, who often fell or stumbled.

Secondly, with a small donation from African Impact volunteers, we were able to finally complete the connection of the water tank, which was donated earlier this year, with the toilets at the home.  Now, even if water is shut off, the residents will still be able to keep using the toilets, ensuring a more sanitary environment for the elderly and workers who call the centre home.

About this project

ALERT has an on-going community care project devoted to refurbishing the Victoria Falls Old People’s Home and improving the lives of the Home’s two employees and 12 residents.  A current lack of support, funding and infrastructure makes adequate care difficult without the help of outside donors.  As a result, it is ALERT’s aim to assist the Old People’s Home by encouraging donors to help provide an environment that is safe and agreeable for the residents and those in need of care in the future.
