After collecting a surplus of clothing donations at our projects in Victoria Falls, given generously by Victoria Falls community members, as well as volunteers from our partners at Lion Encounter, it was time to take them to the residents of the Victoria Falls Old People’s Home.
ALERT assists at the Victoria Falls Old People’s Home in a variety of ways in an effort to improve the Home’s functionality, and the quality of life for those who live there. We assist the two caregivers at the Home in their food garden, with washing, cleaning and tidying, as well as serving meals. Volunteers and staff from ALERT also facilitate a support group each week to help ensure residents feel supported and well cared for.
Donations are collected by staff until we have enough that they can be given out fairly to those most in need during support group sessions. With temperatures having dropped during these winter months, the residents were very pleased to receive new clothing. With the ALERT team’s assistance, each resident was given the same number of donations, all items fit well, and were to their own personal taste.
The elderly at the Victoria Falls Old People’s Home are some of the most vulnerable members of the Victoria Falls society. Many are from other African countries and came to Zimbabwe when passports and papers were not needed for migration and are now stuck in the country with no one to care for them. The support provided by those, like ALERT, who assist the Home is the only care the residents receive.
About this project
ALERT has an on-going community care project devoted to refurbishing the Victoria Falls Old People’s Home and improving the lives of the Home’s two employees and 12 residents. A current lack of support, funding and infrastructure makes adequate care difficult without the help of outside donors. As a result, it is ALERT’s aim to assist the Old People’s Home by encouraging donors to help provide an environment that is safe and agreeable for the residents and those in need of care in the future.
