A socio-economic analysis of trophy hunting areas
April 2 2012

Whilst we shall await a full report from our partner LionAid on the proceedings of the lion range state conference held these past few days in Johannesburg, ALERT can confirm that the conference was highly productive.  A number of resolutions proposed by the range states themselves were agreed by all participants and which we believe will make significant contributions to the conservation of the species.

One of the issues under discussion at the conference was the benfits or otherwise of uplisting of the African lion to CITES Appendix I.  We would like to draw your attention to a discussion of an IUCN publication from 2009 that considers the socio-economic impact of lion trophy hunting as you consider this important issue for yourself.
