In April, the Lion Encounter staff and volunteers at the rural Monde Primary School, just outside the town of Victoria Falls, facilitated a Holiday Club aimed at helping and encouraging 26 enthusiastic children with their studies.
The energetic learners attended daily and showed great improvement with every session, particularly in their math and reading skills. There was a great improvement in the overall performance of the children and this gave us a great sense of fulfillment; the work that we are doing is making a visible difference.
“Holiday Club is very important to the kids,” explains Lion Encounter Community Coordinator Norman Moyo, “We focus on English and Math and we can attend to students individually because the kids come in smaller numbers. When the day schools open again these kids from the Holiday Club will have obviously learned something,” concludes Moyo.
An exciting development included the assistance of ALERT Intern Yana. This support meant that we were able to cater for 11 special needs students at the Holiday Club; it was wonderful that they were able to benefit from this too.
The Holiday Club is a very good forum for students during the holidays. It gives them the opportunity to improve in the areas where they have struggled during the school term, they receive dedicated attention and we take the time to ensure that basic principles are clearly understood. It also gives the children a sense of belonging and family.
Holiday Club has been an exciting time for the kids - we all look forward to it each time. Thank you to everyone involved. To join our team and inspire lives on a daily basis, contact us for more information.
