Penya & Paza have been coming ever closer to the zebra. This morning they again tried to catch one of the most beautifully marked plains species. As both young lions saw the herd they moved forward with purpose and immediately separated. Penya using a well placed ant hill and tree to flank around to the left and Paza moved slightly to the right.
The herd was close by and it was only as the lions speed increased that the zebra decided to move off. The stallion was at the back protecting the herd and ran with the rest to begin with.
The lions and the zebra disappeared into semi thick bush and were out of sight for a moment. As we came across them again the stallion had turned the tables and was chasing Paza. Penya was poised for another chase when the stallion changed direction and headed for Penya. Both lions were trying their best to get around the back of the stallion but as and when they tried the big protector of the herd charged them again. It became a game of chess with careful moves by either side. But the zebra, and the stallion in particular, are very good at this game and soon brought the match to stalemate. The lions tired and the herd, along with the stallion, made a hasty getaway.
