Penya is still gunning for a giraffe

Penya & the giraffe

As Paza walked along minding her own business, Penya was focused on the serious business of a being a young hunter. She spotted giraffe and her eyes lit up. Her head was up and her eyes were fully focused on the small herd. The giraffe were curious as to what was approaching them and stayed to watch - a decision that turned out to be a mistake.

Paza was now showing some interest and entered a standing stalk, approaching the giraffe from the left hand side. She was in a very open area and had no real cover, but as she continued her stalk Penya started to flank out to the right in a crouching stalk.

As the lions both gained good ground on the giraffe, that were still just standing and watching the hunt unfold, Penya suddenly broke into a sprint. The giraffe spooked and started to run but they had left it too late.  Penya isolated an adult female and as she got close launched herself onto the giraffe's hind legs and sand her teeth in.  The giraffe kicked with its hugely powerful legs and Penya was knocked to the ground. Penya was so close to the leg that the kick had little impact. Penya was back on the ground again and launched for another attack. The giraffe kicked Penya again and she landed back on the floor. Standing quickly she leapt but could not manage to jump high enough to get on the giraffes back, but latched on to a hind leg once more, and again, gave a good bite.  With a heavy fling of its leg the giraffe dislodged Penya a second time, but this time, the effort produced the desired result.

Penya had had enough for now, and gave up the chase.  She turned and called for her Paza who had been half heartedly keeping up with the chase. They reunited and had a long bout of face rubbing and grooming.

One day Penya!
