The Ls and the wildebeest

Lewa & Laili

On the 2 Ls lion walk these developing hunters have been at it again. This time their attention was on wildebeest. We came across a herd of twenty or so and Lewa was the first lioness to spot them. We were about 200 metres away.

wildebeest

Lewa flanked left through the long grass while Laili, spotting her sisters body language, immediately went into hunting mode. Laili was fully focused now and moved toward the game, flanking right. She stalked for a minute or so and started to get quite close. She broke cover and ran toward the wildebeest. Standing behind her, it looked as if she had blown the hunt. Then out of the long grass came Lewa. She ran straight toward the wildebeest and scared it back toward the charging Laili. The wildebeest was caught between a rock and a hard place. Now both lions were chasing the wildebeest straight toward each other. Laili got to the wildebeest first and as it turned to escape, it was already too late and Laili pounced. She landed on its back and after a brief struggle, the wildebeest shook Laili off. Lewa could not get to her sister in time to help and the lucky wildebeest made a hasty getaway. It is a pleasure to watch these two special lioness, grow up.
