Volunteer

I am so privileged to be able to be a part of this project and to experience working hands on with the cubs. All the staff were so friendly, full of smiles & helpful. I believe whole-heartily, 100% in this project and look forward to returning & receiving follow ups on the progress of the cubs & future releases to the final stage. I admire Andrew Conolly for making his dream come true, his determination and all the dedicated staff for making their dream of helping the African Lion come true. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to be a part of this project & for the amazing personal experience I had with the cubs. It is a child-hood dream come true and also is a very rewarding experience to volunteer on such a unique and important project.” Mags Toulis, New Zealand

Make Your Impact

Through our sister organization www.africanimpact.com, self-funded voluntourists from around the world can come and join our various lion, conservation, research and community development programs. These programs benefit greatly, not only from the time that the voluntourist spends on each project, but also the project fees that they pay goes towards funding the projects themselves.

We currently offer three locations to work on this program.

Livingstone, Zambia

Based at ALERT's African headquarters within the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park next to the Zambezi River and the Victoria Falls, volunteers here are able to work hands on with the African lion; assisting us to prepare the cubs for their release into the next stage of the program. You will take the lions for their daily walks, care for the younger cubs and get involved in our research programs.  In early 2010 our Night Encounter area will become operational affording volunteers the opportunity to follow these magnificent creatures into the night and undertake research on the older lions as they near release into the second stage of the program.

Your project managers will give you all the training that you need to interact with these incredible animals as well as an induction program to introduce you to the varied flora, fauna and culture of your host country.

Volunteers at our Livingstone base also have the opportunity to be involved in a number of our other ongoing research programs that include some of Africa's most charistmatic creatures; the African elephant, hyeana and wild dog.

Our current community programs as part of the conservation projects include providing conservation education, medical and teaching programs to rural communities.

Within Livingstone town itself it volunteers have the option of medical, teaching and sports coaching projects.

I gained a great deal from both the project and by just being in Africa. I saw such an abundance of wildlife that you can only dream about; all the people I came in contact with were so warm and giving even though they live in very difficult times. All the staff were fantastic and made the experience what it is was. The program itself is very worthwhile and gives volunteers the opportunity to see such a different way of living and appreciation of life. Everything we do whilst on the program is so worthwhile and has taught me a lot about Africa and the wildlife.

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Against the backdrop of the majestic Victoria Falls, this project is a combination of work on our lion breeding and rehabilitation programme that is an extension of our Antelope Park programme, along with National Parks conservation work and conservation education in the local school.

Volunteers will take the young cubs out into the Zambezi National Park as they learn their hunting skills ready for release into stage two.

The Park is home to a vast array of wildlife.  You will have the opportunity to be part of a number of research programs we operate here such as our large predator survey (leopard, lion, cheetah, wild dog, hyeana), our sable antelope study as well as projects focused on biodiversity monitoring, ground hornbills amongst others.

Within Victoria Falls National Park you will be engaged in alien plant species eradication and biological monitoring of the mist forest created by the spray from the Falls themselves.  There are few more beautiful places on earth to work.

Our community work here includes conservation education programs, urban agriculture projects with marginalized groups in society,

African Lion Rehabilitation & Release into the Wild Program

Teaching & Community Upliftment Project

Antelope Park, Zimbabwe

Antelope Park is a private game reserve and home to the African Lion Rehabilitation & Release into the Wild Program.  The Park is home to a number of younger cubs that need to be walked daily as they prepare for release, but there are also older cubs in the Night Encounter program as well as our breeding centre.

In mid 2010 Antelope Park will also host the first of a number of planned stage two release areas allowing volunteers to assist in research on the lions as they adapt to living life on their own.

You will also have the opportunity to spend time with our orphaned African Elephants and their trainers. The elephants at Antelope Park were saved from certain death during a severe drought that ravaged Zimbabwe's South Eastern Lowveld in 1991 and 1992.

For those interested in community work, right on the door step of Antelope Park is the high density area of Mkoba. This is the area where the majority of Gweru’s population live, most of whom do not have access to private healthcare facilities so most are totally dependant on the poorly staffed and serviced local clinics.

Volunteers can assist in the medical clinics, participate in health education campaigns and national immunization drives.

Volunteers will also be able to visit a local pre school and help children with art work, painting, sports, drama and singing.

It has made me realize not to take even the smallest of things for granted as we are no more deserving of our way of life - we were just born in different countries. The fact that everyone here is so grateful for our time alone is a great feeling and I definitely want to do something like this again in the future. I think it has improved my confidence and it has been extremely rewarding to see that even the smallest of things like playing with the children is greatly appreciated. It is something that I will remember forever!
